Peter, who grew up in the automobile business and made a good living for decades in automobile advertising, isn't wrong about many things and certainly not about that. Point-A-to-Point-B transportation may be all that many of us can afford, but it is not something most of us aspire to.
No, given the means to make it happen, most of us would choose a vehicle that makes a statement, that says something about who we are (or who we want people to think we are).
Something with...presence.
The 2027 Range Rover SE LWB (long wheelbase) 7-Seat has presence like few others. It is arguably one of the most common things on four wheels---an SUV. And then, through styling and detail, it becomes uncommon. An aspirational object. Something that says "money" even before you have your suspicions confirmed by the bottom line on the window sticker.
The fundamentals haven't changed since this generation (the fifth) of Range Rover was introduced for the 2022 model year. Those are 21-inch wheels wrapped in rubber that's connected to a tire repair system that will fix run-of-the-mill flats until you can get to a tire shop. All-wheel-drive is standard, along with all-wheel steering, selectable on-and-off-road driving modes, hill launch assist, low traction launch, an electronic suspension and adaptive dynamics.
Under the hood is a 3.0-liter V6. It's mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Exotic? Hardly. Effective? Very, with 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Efficient? In relative terms, yes. This three-ton-plus-25-pound vehicle gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg city/24 mpg highway.
You're looking at 43.1 cubic feet of cargo space because I left the third row folded. With it up, that shrinks to 8.7, but if it's just you or you and someone riding shotgun and you fold both the second and third row, there's a whopping 92.9 cubic feet of capacity.
Second-row legroom is healthy, too, at 39.2 inches.
The base price of the 2027 Range Rover SE LWB 7-Seat is $120,700 ($123,150 including destination). That price includes a long list of standard features like Windsor leather seats, soft-closing doors, a power tailgate, sliding panoramic roof with power sunblind, rear privacy glass, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming, power-folding heated outside mirrors, four-zone climate control with air quality sensing, a heated steering wheel, a Meridian audio system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto plus a robust suite of active safety features.
Our vehicle had a healthy set of extra-cost options as well---upgraded 23-inch wheels ($3,500), a head-up display ($1,400), Gloss Grand Black veneer interior trim ($1,300), an upgraded Meridian 3D sound system ($1,200), the Comfort Pack---twin-blade sunvirsors with illuminated vanity mirrors, a front center console refrigerator compartment and cabin air purification ($1,260), the Premium Interior Protection and Storage Pack ($775), a digital rearview mirror ($650), an SV bespoke wood and leather steering wheel ($550), pixel LED headlights with signature daytime running lights ($600), ebony headlining ($400), an exterior protection pack ($350), the Cold Climate Pack---heated windscreen and washer jets ($550), the Premium Rear Seat Convenience Pack ($290), the Emergency Pack first aid kit ($75), and the Range Rover Handover Pack---a box for the key fobs ($65).
Total as-tested price: $136,040.
Is it worth it? That's a question only those who can afford it can answer, and I'm not in that tax bracket. But I will say this---when it comes to luxury, serenity, capacity and capability, it's really, really hard to beat a Range Rover.
