GRRR! The 2026 Toyota GR Corolla

The phrase "Toyota Corolla" is likely to conjure up an image in your brain. Safe, economical, reliable, somewhat bland.
The phrase "300 horsepower Toyota Corolla" will provoke a different response entirely.

Enthusiasts have known about the GR Corolla for a while now, but it's about to penetrate the general consciousness as Toyota moves production from Japan to the UK and as the GR Corolla enters its second year with an eight-speed automatic transmission as an extra-cost option (I know, I know---but while the exact percentage is a matter of some debate, fewer Americans than ever know how to drive a manual).
The good news---our tester had the stick.
Not that there's anything wrong with the 8-speed automatic, it's a very good one, but there's a level of driver involvement in shifting the gears and the GR Corolla is very much a driver's car that rewards that involvement. The engine making that 300 horsepower is a turbocharged three-cylinder (not a typo). Yep, 100 horsepower per cylinder. 295 lb-ft of torque. Toyota's GR-FOUR all-wheel drive system standard.
Now you could just drop a hot engine under the hood of a Corolla and call it cheap, dirty fun, but that is not what GR (Gazoo Racing---Toyota's motorsport division) is all about.
No, GR transforms the Corolla hatchback. A double-wishbone-type multilink rear suspension, 18-inch 15-spoke alloy wheels, 235/40R18 Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires, 14-inch, four-piston ventilated front disc brakes and 11.7-inch, two-piston ventilated rear disc brakes, front and rear Torsen limited slip differentials.
Pulling out of your driveway and going down the block at 20 miles an hour, you know you're driving something substantial and special. The structure is so stiff, it feels like a 300-horsepower bank vault.
And it is an absolute blast to drive. Resist the urges to lead-foot it all the time and the EPA says you can get 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway and....well...good luck. It can do it. The question is, can you?
Exterior elements include a rear bumper with functional vents, triple exhaust with stainless-steel tips, a gloss black grille with GR badging, front fender vents with GR badging, a bulged hood with functional vents and a forged carbon fiber roof.
Cargo space is exactly what you would find in a non-GR Corolla hatchback---17.8 cubic feet behind the rear seat, and rear seat legroom is pretty much just a suggestion at 29.9 inches.

In the cabin, it's heated brin-naub (artificial suede) and synthetic leather-trimmed front seats---far more supportive than typical Corolla chairs---with GR headrests and a heated GR leather-trimmed steering wheel.
The base price of the 2026 Toyota GR Corolla in Premium Plus trim (our tester) is $45,965 ($47,160) and that money buys a significant list of standard equuipment beyond what we've already discussed (see the window sticker at the end of this review).
Ours also had some extra-cost options---$475 for the Supersonic Red paint, $855 for the rear window spoiler, $319 for the Styling Package (Core Grades shift knob, door sill protectors), $309 for carpeted floor mats and a carpeted cargo mat, $200 for black lug nuts and wheel locks and $65 for a cargo net.
Bottom line on the window sticker: $49,383.

There is precedence for this sort of thing....Volkswagen took the humble Golf, put 315 horses under the hood and sells the Golf R for about the same price point. Honda did the same with the Civic Type R. And it may only have 279 horsepower, but the Hyundai Elantra N absolutely is in this class of high-performance subcompacts.
Friends, we have a hot car battle on our hands.
And I'm totally here for it.
