Waiting For Number Nine: The 2026 Volkswagen Golf GTI

Generally speaking, there are three kinds of model years for a vehicle---all new, refreshed or "carryover" (meaning no changes from the previous model year).

This is a carryover year for the 2026 Volkswagen Golf GTI. And that is by no means a bad or boring thing. It does, however, heighten the anticipation for the next all-new GTI.

1983 Volkswagen GTI commercial.

That TV commercial was (incredibly) 43 years ago, when Volkswagen decided to give America a hot version of the Golf (known here at the time as the Rabbit).

The first-gen GTI was a massive hit among enthusiasts, elbowing its way into Car and Driver's 10Best list in 1983 and 1984, the second time around inspiring David E. Davis, Jr. to wax thus:

"If the GTI were a woman, she’d have an IQ of about 130, play scratch golf, break 25 at skeet with a .410, know how to carve a leg of lamb, never miss a Jay Ward cartoon festival, and have an inexhaustible and playful curiosity about sex."

As you'd expect over four-plus decades and eight generations, there have been ups and downs.

Most of the criticisms of the current Mark 8 GTI, which arrived four years ago, centered around the lack of a manual transmission and the takeover of what had been physical controls in the Mark 7 by a touchscreen and haptic controls.

Physical buttons returned to the steering wheel for 2025 but apart from a volume knob, the touchscreen still rules the audio system. The blue, red and white lines beneath the screen for temperature and fan look like they're haptic, but they are now also physical buttons.

Still, these controls are things you have to at the very least glance at rather than feel for. And in a driver's car, that's not a good thing. Volkswagen promises buttons and knobs are on their way back to its cars, and the GTI is expected to enter its 9th generation by the end of the decade.

And as for the other major complaint...

...the only transmission available is an automatic. The six-speed stick will likely never return.

That last is less of a handicap than manual loyalists might think. Modern automatics, especially precise units like the GTI's seven-speed dual clutch automatic, can shift faster than human beings, at the exact optimal point for performance. The result: Quicker 0-60 sprints and higher fuel economy.

The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder makes 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. VW doesn't cite a 0-60 time, but Car and Driver says it saw 5.6 seconds. The EPA's fuel economy estimate is 24 city/32 highway, but in a 114-mile trip on urban freeways and rural interstates, I crushed that number:

Off the interstate and on winding back roads, that number gets a bit smaller, but stays well within the EPA estimate. Meantime, thanks to the GTI's sharp steering and handling, the grin on my face just kept getting bigger.

The GTI flips the old "business in the front, party in the back" equation (Mike, that was about a haircut). While the fun is under the hood and at the wheel, the cargo area is very practical for a small car, with 19.9 cubic feet of cargo space. Fold the rear seats, and you've got 34.5.

Rear seat legroom is more than adequate as well, at 35 inches.

The GTI comes in three trim levels, S, SE and Autobahn. Our test vehicle was the SE (base price $39,080---$40,355 including destination). That money buys a solid set of standard equipment (see the window sticker at the end of the review).

The only extra-cost option on our tester was the Kings Red Metallic paint ($455), so the bottom line on the window sticker reads $40,810.

The GTI may not be perfect, and it may not live up to what we know VW is capable of doing with this car. But it is still an absolute kick to drive, gets great mileage and, depending on which trim you choose, you can get one for a shade more than 40 grand or one heck of a lot less. For a lot of drivers, (Mark) 8 could be enough.
